Problem
  • Transportation of sand (in flexible container bags) to Hokkaido
  • Loads of sand often collapsed, and the customer was reimbursing their customers each time.
Proposed solution
  • We considered the optimum load-tightening support method.
  • We devised a support method using composite panels and ratchet belts.
Results and effects
Loads of sand (in flexible container bags) collapsed during transportation by trailer.
Problem

Loads of sand (in flexible container bags) collapsed during transportation by trailer.

The shipper was transporting sand (in flexible container bags) to Hokkaido with another transportation company.

Stacked in two layers, when the sand was loaded onto trailers, the sand on the lower layer moved inside the bags due to vibrations during transportation. Even though it was fastened, the bags of sand often collapsed during transportation and the customer was reimbursing their customers each time.

We were asked if there were any good solutions and how to tighten the load.

We conducted a field survey with veteran crew members to derive an effective support method.
Proposed solution

We conducted a field survey with veteran crew members to derive an effective support method.

The shipper said that they wanted to ask us to transport the sand if we could solve the load collapses during transportation.

To do that, we firstly visited the destination with veteran crew members to confirm the product. Then we took the information back to the company and considered the best way to tighten and support a load. We judged that putting panels between the upper and lower layers and using ratchet belts to support the two stacked products tightly in rows would be effective.

After proposing the above, we gave a shipping estimate and received the contract.

As a result of test transportation using the devised support method, we were able to prevent the load collapsing.
Results and effects

As a result of test transportation using the devised support method, we were able to prevent the load collapsing.

As a result of test transportation using the support method we devised, we succeeded in preventing the load from collapsing during transportation. Regarded highly by the shipper, we received a request for regular transportation.

No load has collapsed since the support method was changed. We have gained the trust of the shipper and have received various inquiries about other transportation.
