Industry Logistics
Type of cargo Miscellaneous goods, building materials, parts, etc.
Purpose Building of transportation methods other than existing methods
Transportation area Hokkaido, Kyushu

In the logistics industry in recent years, measures to deal with driver shortages and long working hours have become major issues. Further, securing multiple modes of transportation including marine and air transportation, as well as land transportation, is a lifeline for companies due to frequently occurring disasters. In these circumstances, we were consulted about the use of marine transportation.

Problem
  • The company struggled over measures for shortage of drivers and long work hours.
  • At times of disaster, transportation plans were disrupted by stoppages due to blocked roads.
Proposed solution
  • Effective BCP (business continuity plan) measure because it is marine transportation.
  • Consideration for the environment (reduction of CO2 emissions)
Results and effects
  • Request when land transportation routes are blocked
  • The company’s services also match driver shortages and long work hours measures.
A number of issues arose due to mainly using land transportation.
Problem

A number of issues arose due to mainly using land transportation.

A customer in the logistics industry was mainly transporting by land to handle transportation orders from multiple customers.
But the company has been struggling to cope with the driver shortage and long work hours in recent years.

Further, when disasters occurred in the past, transportation plans were disrupted by stoppages due to blocked road, making it difficult to respond to customer requests.

Marine transportation can also be effective for BCP and environmental measures.
Proposed solution

Marine transportation can also be effective for BCP and environmental measures.

We proposed transportation using the ships departing regularly from Port of Nagoya to Hokkaido (via Tokyo, Sendai) and Okinawa (via Kagoshima).

In particular, being marine transportation, it is an effective BCP measure (business continuity planning aimed at smooth business continuity or rapid recovery without stopping business even if a natural or man-made disaster occurs).

In addition, after discussing in full the merits of being able to consider the environment (CO2 emissions reductions) and also appeal to customer manufacturers, we then explained the basic fee and made our proposal.

As an alternative during bad weather, it also helps driver shortage measures.
Results and effects

As an alternative during bad weather, it also helps driver shortage measures.

The customer was grateful that we were able to supplement their transportation tools. In fact, bad weather (typhoons and prolonged heavy rain) has occurred frequently lately and we have received requests when land routes have been blocked.

As a result, we are contributing to the observance of the delivery deadlines undertaken by the customer. In addition, our company’s services also match driver shortage and long work hours measures, and we have received a certain level of recognition.
